DE CARA, CESARE ANTONIO. - Jesuit, Orientalist, b. at Reggio Calabria on 13 Nov. 1835, d. at Castelgandolfo on 27 Dec. 1905. Associated with La Civiltà Cattolica in 1881, he there treated bold questions of historical philology, Egyptian archaeology, ancient Oriental, Greek and Italic history.
Principal works: Gli Hyksos o re pastori di Egitto (Rome 1889); Gli Hethiei-Pelasi (3 vols., ibid. 1894-1902). Though subject to reservations, these writings are distinguished by subtle analysis and keen logic.
