DE CARA, CESARE ANTONIO. — Jesuit, Orientalist, born in Reggio Calabria on 13 November 1835, died in Castelgandolfo on 27 December 1905. He joined the Civiltà Cattolica in 1881, where he addressed bold questions of historical philology, Egyptian archaeology, and ancient Oriental, Greek, and Italic history.
Principal works: Gli Hyksos o re pastori di Egitto (Rome 1889); Gli Hethei-Palazzi (3 vols., there 1894–1902). Although subject to reservations, these writings are distinguished by their subtle analysis and acute logic.
