Italian original Cite

DEMETER, IGNAZ ANTON. - Archbishop of Freiburg, b. at Augsburg on 1 Aug. 1773, d. at Freiburg im Breisgau on 21 March 1842. Parish priest at Lautlingen, at Rastatt and at Sasbach, he had especially at heart the education of youth.

A member of the Cathedral Chapter of Freiburg, in 1833 he drafted for Archbishop B. Boll the reply to the papal brief of 4 Oct. 1833, in which Gregory XVI lamented the desolate conditions of the diocese of Freiburg. On the death of Boll (1836), D. was one of the government candidates for the archiepiscopal dignity, after the disapproval of the election of the vicars by the civil authority. As archbishop he proved weak in the face of the abuses of the State, especially in the question of mixed marriages.
