DEMETER, IGNATIUS ANTON. - Archbishop of Freiburg, b. at Augsburg on 10 Aug. 1773, d. at Freiburg in Br. on 21 March 1842. Parish priest at Lautlingen, Rastatt, and Sasbach, he was especially concerned with the education of youth.
A member of the Cathedral Chapter of Freiburg, in 1833 he drafted for Archbishop B. Boll the reply to the papal brief of 4 Oct. 1833, in which Gregory XVI deplored the desolate conditions of the diocese of Freiburg. Upon Boll’s death (1836), D. was one of the government’s candidates for the archiepiscopal dignity, after the civil authority had disapproved of the election of vicars. As archbishop, he proved weak in the face of state abuses, especially in the matter of mixed marriages.
