DEMETER, IGNAZ ANTON. – Archbishop of Freiburg, born at Augusta on 1 August 1773, died at Freiburg in Br. on 21 March 1842. Parish priest at Lautlingen, Rastatt, and Sasbach, he was particularly concerned with the education of youth.
A member of the cathedral chapter of Freiburg, in 1833 he drafted for Archbishop B. Boll the reply to the papal brief of 4 October 1833, in which Gregory XVI lamented the desolate conditions of the diocese of Freiburg. Upon Boll’s death (1836), D. was one of the governmental candidates for the archiepiscopal dignity, following the disapproval of-
the election of the vicars by the civil authority. As archbishop, he proved weak in the face of abuses by the State, especially in the matter of mixed marriages.
