DEVINE, ARTHUR. – Passionist theologian, in religion Arturo di S. Paolo della Croce, born at Kilmacter (Ireland) on 3 December 1849, died at Mount Argus (Dublin) on 20 April 1919. He taught theology and Holy Scripture for 42 years and, during his residence of almost 30 years in London, zealously participated in the development of the “Oxford Movement.” An effective preacher and spiritual director, he brought many Anglicans into the Catholic Church.
Among his works, special mention should be made of: Auxilium praedicatorum. A short gloss upon the Gospels (3 vols., Dublino 1884); History of the Passion (Londra 1890); A manual of ascetical theology (Ivi 1902); A manual of mystical theology (Ivi 1903); The Sacraments explained according to the teaching and doctrine of the Catholic Church with an introductory treatise on Grace (5th ed., Ivi 1918); The Creed explained (9th ed., Ivi 1923). He was an esteemed contributor to The Catholic Encyclopedia and the General Review.
