DEVINE, ARTHUR. - Passionist theologian, in religion Arturo di S. Paolo della Croce, born at Kilmactier (Ireland) on 3 Dec. 1849, died at Mount Argus (Dublin) on 20 Apr. 1919. He taught for 42 years theology and Sacred Scripture and during his residence of nearly 30 years in London zealously participated in the development of the “Oxford Movement.” An effective preacher and director of souls, he introduced many Anglicans into the Catholic Church.
Among his works, the following deserve special mention: Auxilium praedicatorum. A short gloss upon the Gospels (3 vols., Dublin 1884); History of the Passion (London 1890); A manual of ascetical theology (ibid. 1902); A manual of mystical theology (ibid. 1903); The Sacraments explained according to the teaching and doctrine of the Catholic Church with an introductory treatise on Grace (5th ed., ibid. 1918); The Creed explained (9th ed., ibid. 1923).
