DEVINE, ARTHUR. - Passionist theologian, in religion Arthur of St. Paul of the Cross, b. at Kilmacter (Ireland) on 3 Dec. 1849, d. at Mount Argus (Dublin) on 20 Apr. 1919. He taught theology and Sacred Scripture for 42 years, and during his nearly 30-year residence in London he took part with zeal in the development of the "Oxford Movement." An effective preacher and director of consciences, he brought many Anglicans into the Catholic Church.
Among his works special mention is due to: Auxilium praedicatorum. A short gloss upon the Gospels (3 vols., Dublin 1884); History of the Passion (London 1890); A manual of ascetical theology (Ibid. 1902); A manual of mystical theology (Ibid. 1903); The Sacraments explained according to the teaching and doctrine of the Catholic Church with an introductory treatise on Grace (5th ed., Ibid. 1918); The Creed explained (9th ed., Ibid. 1923).
