DIOTREPHES. - A person mentioned with reproach in 3 John 9–10.
The name (Διοτρεφής) is found in Greek inscriptions and authors (J. Chaine, p. 256). D. must have been a leader of the community to which Gaius (q.v.), the recipient of the letter, also belonged. John wrote (ἔγραψα τῇ, “I wrote something,” instead of ἐγραψα ἂν, “he would have written”).
