ELETTA. - Nell'intestazione di II Io. si legge: « Il presbitero a una E. Signora (ἐκλεκτῆ, κυρία) e si figli di lei ». Nell'epilogo: « Ti salutano i figli della tua sorella l'E. » (v. 13). L'interpretazione più comune vede nel termine E. un sinonimo di Chiesa.Also in 1 Pt. 5:13 the Church of Rome (Babylon) is called "co-e." In our case the collective sense results from the shift from "you" (singular) to "you" (plural) (vv. 5, 8, 10, 12). The children of the E. are the elect (Christians). Every church formed of the elect is an "e." The Church, mystical bride of the Lord, is "Lady."

Since the article is missing in the heading, one may think that 2 Jn. is a kind of circular letter.

Less probable are the interpretations that see in the terms e. and Lady (kyria) proper names.
