HENRY OF FRIEMAR. - Augustinian historian and theologian, b. at Fremel, a small village in Thuringia, ca. 1254, d. at the age of eighty in 1334. From his earliest youth he belonged to the Order of St. Augustine. He studied at the Sorbonne, and became famous for his writings on philosophy and theology. He was also active in scriptural, ascetic and mystical studies. He was a religious superior of holy life, esteemed and loved by all his subjects.

His fame is chiefly linked to a short work that he wrote on the history of the Augustinians, with which he exercised a great influence on later historians treating the affairs of the Order, especially for the times in which H. lived and wrote. His principal works were published: De quatuor instinctibus: decimo, angelico, diabolico, mundano (Venice 1498, Hagenau 1513, Paris 1514); De spiritibus eorumque discretione (Venice 1498 and Antwerp 1652); Additiones ad libros Sententiarum (Basel 1497, Cologne 1513); Pro conceptione B. V. Marine (Louvain 1604); Expositio in Decalogum (Cologne 1498); Passio D. N. (Paris 1514, Hagenau 1517); Sermones de sanctis (ibid. 1513, Paris 1514); De origine et progressu Ordinis FF. EE. S. Augustini (Venice 1514, and in Amadeus Augustiniano, 4 (1912), pp. 298-307, 321-28).
