Eustathians

EUSTAZIANI

EUSTATHIANS. - This was the name given to those heretics who, harking back to Eustathius, bishop of Sebaste, exaggerated his ascetic teachings, reviving the Encratite tendencies of the preceding age; they were therefore condemned at the Council of Gangra in Paphlagonia (340?).

They condemned marriage, maintaining that in that state it was impossible to serve God; they therefore separated spouses, thereby causing disorder; they held separate conventicles, introducing strange customs in dress; they held that the rich could not be saved unless they abandoned what they had; they observed customs of their own with regard to fasting.
