EUSTATHIUS, bishop of Antioch. — Opponent of Arianism at the Council of Nicaea (325) and also later. The emperor Constantine sent him into exile (330) where he died in 337. Only his treatise on the Pythoness of Endor (1 Sam. 28) directed against Origen has been preserved in its entirety.
This writing was composed even before the anti-Arian struggles, as probably also one (or two?) treatise(s) on the soul, of which fragments have been preserved in John of Damascus. Fragments on the titles of the psalms and on the psalms themselves are in part of disputed authenticity. Some fragments of a letter to Alexander of Alexandria on Melchizedek, against Origen, *De visione Isaiae* (G. Morin, *Analecta Morcavcolana*, III, 11, pp. 103-22), the book on the *Examenon* (PG 18, 707-4) and a liturgy are wrongly attributed to E.
