Also known as: Saint Eustathius of Antioch, Eustathios of Antioch; French: Eustathe d'Antioche; Italian: Eustazio di Antiochia; Latin: Eustathius Antiochenus

EUSTATHIUS, Bishop of Antioch. - An opponent of Arianism at the Council of Nicaea (325) and also later. The emperor Constantine sent him into exile (330), where he died in 337. Only his treatise on the Witch of Endor (I Sam. 28), directed against Origen, has been preserved in its entirety.

This writing was composed even before the anti-Arian struggles, as was probably also a treatise (or two?) on the soul, of which fragments have been preserved in John Damascene. Fragments on the titles of the psalms and on the psalms themselves are in part of disputed authenticity. From a letter to Alexander of Alexandria on Melchizedek some fragments against Origen have been preserved, De visione Euae (G. Morin, Analecta Maredsolana, III, III, pp. 103-22); the book on the Hexaemeron (PG 18, 707-94) and a liturgy are wrongly attributed to E. The attribution of the Sermo maior de Fide and of the Expositio Fidei to E. is disputed.
