GIORGI, Bishop Ariano of Laodicea. - A native of Alexandria, where he was a priest at the beginning of the Arian controversy, he was deposed by Bishop Alexander because of his unworthy life. Rejected also by Eustathius, bishop of Antioch, he went to Aretusa. He was received by the Arian bishop Sophronius and in 331 was made bishop of Laodicea, and as such took part in the Council of Tyre of 335, which deposed St. Athanasius.

He also attended the Councils of Jerusalem of the same year and of Antioch in 341. At the Catholic Council of Sardica in 343 he was deposed. After the promulgation of the second Anomoean formula of Sirmium in 357, he wrote a letter to Basil of Ancyra urging him to work for the condemnation of Aetius, and took part in the Council of Ancyra of 358, at which Homoiousianism was promulgated. He was also present at the Council of Seleucia of 359, after which there is no further record of him; he must have died shortly afterward. Well versed in philosophy and dialectic, he also wrote short treatises against the heretics and especially against the Manichaeans, and an oration in praise of Eusebius of Emesa.
