EUSEBIUS OF EMESA. - Born at Edessa, he was elected bishop of Emesa because of his knowledge of Greek and Syriac. His Semitic style still finds expression in his rhetoric. Little interested in theological problems, in the first rank an exegete of Sacred Scripture, of the Antiochene type (St. Jerome says he saw his tomb at Antioch), and a disciple of Eusebius of Caesarea, he was listed by St. Jerome among the Arians, but was not accused of heresy by St. Epiphanius, probably because of his traditionalism, his interest in the holy places and his asceticism. Died around 359.
Until recently only a few fragments of his were known, in Theodoret and certain Syriac authors; the discovery of 17 homilies of E. in a Latin translation
(4th-5th centuries) by Fr. A. Wilmart, in a manuscript of Troyes (the same manuscript no. 523, once in the possession of the abbey of Clairvaux, which also contains Tertullian, De Baptismo) will offer, when the entire text is published, the possibility of better situating the figure and work of E. in his time.
