EUSEBIUS OF DORYLAEUM. - A zealous and learned layman, very prominent at Constantinople, later bishop of Dorylaeum. He reacted publicly against Nestorius during the discourse delivered at Christmas 428, and posted a public accusation against him in which he charged him with guilt of the same heresy as Paul of Samosata. Once Nestorius had been condemned, he, already bishop of Dorylaeum and a friend of Eutyches, did not hesitate to present to Flavian, bishop of Constantinople, on 8 Nov. 448, a formal accusation against the heresy of Eutyches.

During the "Robber Council of Ephesus" Dioscorus obtained that E. be forbidden to present himself, despite the protests of Flavian and of the papal legates. Eutyches was rehabilitated and Flavian and E. were condemned, deposed and imprisoned. E., after having had an appeal of his delivered to the Pope by two of his clerics, managed to escape and took refuge in Rome, where he was still present in Apr. 451 (letter of St. Leo the Great to Pulcheria, Epist., LXXIX, 3: PL 54, 912). When the Council of Chalcedon opened, he sent to the emperor Marcian and to the Council a statement, in which he asked justice for himself and for Flavian and accused Dioscorus of heresy. The rehabilitation of E. and the condemnation of Dioscorus inevitably followed. E., however, took part in the approval of can. 28, which established the primacy of honor, after Rome, of the Church of Constantinople, despite the refusal of the papal legates. The date of his death is not known.
