EUSEBIUS OF CREMONA, Saint. - Priest and disciple of St. Jerome. Born of a distinguished family of Cremona around the middle of the 4th century, while still young he renounced the allurements of the world in order to consecrate himself entirely to God. Having gone to Rome to visit the tomb of the Apostles, he came to know St. Jerome and bound himself to him in a bond of spiritual friendship.
From this moment E. would find in Jerome the ideal master, who would guide him with a sure hand in the ways of knowledge and piety. He accompanied him indeed to the East, following him in the various wanderings of Egypt and Palestine, in order to visit the most famous monasteries and the places sanctified by the life of the Savior. Finally he withdrew with him to Bethlehem, in the monastery founded by the master, of which he assumed the governance after the latter's death. To E. the holy Doctor dedicated his commentaries on Jeremiah and on St. Matthew. A treatise on the mystery of the Cross was attributed to him; but today its authenticity is greatly doubted. He died before the middle of the 5th century. E. is honored as a saint at Cremona on March 5, at Bethlehem on October 19; nevertheless his name is not included in the Roman Martyrology.
