EVAGRIO. - Around 430 a certain E. published in Gaul, under the title Alteratio legis inter Simonum Iudaeum et Theophilum Christianum, a Jewish-Christian disputation which, in the 5th century, was in everyone’s hands (Gennadio, De viris illustribus, 50).
The discussion is conducted on the basis of the Old Testament. The thesis of A. Harnock, Die Alteratio Simons, etc. (Textes and Untersuch., 1, 111, Lipsia 1883), according to which the Alteratio would be nothing more than a reworking of the Dialogo di Iuono e Papisco Aristone di Pella (v.), is untenable. E. knew Tertulliano, Cipriano’s Testimonia, and Gregorio di Elvira.
