EUSTRAZIO. - Metropolitan of Nicaea, who lived in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, d. after 1117. A dissident and anti-Latin, he wrote several philosophical and theological works and engaged in controversy with the archbishop of Milan, Pietro Grossolani. He was deposed for his errors concerning Christology. His writings were partly edited by Demetrakopulos, Ἐκκλ. βιβλιοθήκη, I, Leipzig 1866, p. 47 ff. The acts of his trial are in Ἀθηναῖον, 4 (1875), pp. 227-33.
He is the author of a treatise against adherents of the doctrine of the sleep of the soul until the resurrection (v. Fazio, Bibl. cod., 171), published by Leo Allatius, De utriusque Ecclesiae occidentalis atque orientalis perpetua in dogmata de Purgatorio consanguine (Rome 1655, pp. 519-580; absent from PG). Previously he had written a lost work: On the Soul and the Holy Angels. He is the author of a life of the patriarch Eutichio (PG 86, II, 2273-2300).
