EUSTRATIOS. - Metropolitan of Nicaea, who lived in the 11th-12th centuries, d. after 1117. A dissident and anti-Latin, he wrote several philosophical and theological works and polemicized with the archbishop of Milan, Pietro Grossolani. He was deposed for his errors concerning Christology. His writings are edited in part by Demetrakopulos, Ἐκκλ. βιβλιοθήκη, I, Leipzig 1866, p. 47 ff. The acts of his trial in Ἀθηναῖον, 4 (1875), pp. 227-33.

He is the author of a treatise against the adherents of the doctrine of the sleep of the soul until the resurrection (v. Fazio, Bibl. cod., 171), published by Leo Allatius, De utriusque Ecclesiae occidentalis atque orientalis perpetua in dogmata de Purgatorio consanguine (Rome 1655, pp. 519-580; missing in PG). Previously he had written a lost work: On the Soul and the Holy Angels. He is the author of a life of the patriarch Eutychius (PG 86, II, 2273-2300).
