GEORGE OF NICOMEDIA. — He lived in the second half of the 9th century. As archivist of Hagia Sophia and intimate friend of Patriarch Photius, he was appointed by the latter metropolitan of Nicomedia in 860. He remained loyal to Photius even during the latter’s disgrace.
G. was more an orator than a theologian. Manuscript codices have preserved 170 of his homilies, of which only ten—all concerning the Virgin Mary—have been published, first by I. Marracci and later in PG 100, 1336–1528.
