Fernandez, Lucas

FERNANDEZ, LUCAS. - Spanish poet, b. in Salamanca ca. 1474, d. there in 1542. He held musical posts in the Cathedral and in the University of Salamanca.

In 1514, being a beneficiary of the church of St. Thomas Cantilupe, he published six Farsas y iglagas al modo y estilo pastoril y castellano, two of which are on religious subjects, revealing himself as an epigone of Juan del Encina. The Auto de la Pasión is noteworthy for the vigor of its feelings, at times tending toward the pathetic, and for the felicity with which the characters are picturesquely sketched. Inferior to his master in output, he surpasses him in reflection and religious feeling.
