DAUGHTERS OF THE DIVINE SAVIOUR (Buenos Aires).—In 1795, Mother María Antonia de la Paz y Figueroa founded a beaterio, that is, an association of pious persons who, though not bound by vows, lived in common under the guidance of a superioress with the aim of promoting the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius among the faithful by gathering those who wished to make them in suitable houses. The initiative developed first as a society approved by the civil government and later as several societies which, in 1878, under Archbishop Mariano José de Escalada of Buenos Aires, grew into a religious congregation with simple vows.
On 19 May 1933 the Institute received the decree of praise and temporary approval of its constitutions, and on 26 January 1942 definitive approval. Besides their work of giving the Exercises, the sisters devote themselves to safeguarding young women from moral dangers by receiving them into special boarding schools. In 1947 it had seven houses with sixty-five sisters.
