FIGLIE DEL DIVIN REDENTORE (Giavarino). - At Niederbronn, in the diocese of Strasbourg, an institute known as that of the Divine Redeemer was founded in 1849 through the work of Elisabetta Eppinger, and was approved by the Holy See in 1863. In that year Mons. Giovanni Simor, bishop of Giavarino (Hungary), requested and obtained the services of several sisters from the new Institute.
The distance from the mother house, difficulties of communication and language, and other causes led to the separation of the Hungarian houses from the old mother house. That of Sopronio became the new mother house, and Mons. Zolka gave it new rules in 1867. On 15 July 1913, the Hungarian Institute of the Divine Redeemer became of pontifical right; on 31 July 1925 it received from the Holy See definitive approval, and temporary approval of its constitutions. The sisters devote themselves to the care of the sick, including in their homes, and to the education of youth. In 1947 there were 1,584 sisters, distributed among 135 houses.
