DAUGHTERS OF THE DIVINE REDEEMER (Giavarino). - In Niederbronn, in the diocese of Strasbourg, an institute known as that of the Divine Redeemer arose in 1849 through the work of Elisabeth Eppinger, approved by the Holy See in 1863. In that year Msgr. John Simor, bishop of Győr (Hungary), requested and obtained the work of some sisters of the new Institute.

The distance from the mother house, the difficulty of communication and of language, and other causes advised the separation of the Hungarian houses from the old mother house. That of Sopron became the new mother house, and in 1867 Msgr. Zolka gave it new rules. On July 15, 1913, the Hungarian Institute of the Divine Redeemer became one of pontifical right; on July 31, 1925, it received from the Holy See the definitive approval, in addition to the temporary approval of its constitutions. The sisters devote themselves to the care of the sick, including in their homes, and to the education of youth. In 1947 the sisters numbered 1,584, distributed among 135 houses.
