DAUGHTERS OF OUR LADY AT MOUNT CALVARY (ROME). - The Institute arose in 1641, through the work of Virginia Centurione Bracelli, and was subject to many vicissitudes until it reached its present stability thanks to the generosity of the Genoese patrician Emanuele Brignola.

On 23 May 1827 Leo XII called some sisters to Rome so that they might take care of the women sheltered in the Hospice of S. Maria degli Angeli alle Terme. On 10 June 1833 Gregory XVI assigned them the monastery and church of S. Norberto, and on 8 July 1842 he approved their rule. On 2 June 1922 the constitutions conformed to the Code were approved, and on 15 Sept. 1948 a new text, drafted according to new needs, was definitively approved.

The special end of the Institute is teaching and education; the sisters also take care of abandoned young people, of the old and the sick in hospitals, preventoria, etc. In 1949 the Institute had 74 houses and 590 sisters.
