PHILIP HEROD. - Son of Herod the Great and of Mariamne II, husband of Herodias. He is called only F. in Mk. 6:17, whereas Flavius Josephus (Antiq. Iud., XVIII, 5, 1, 4; Bell. Iud., I, 28, 2) calls him only Herod; it is more than probable that he had both names, a normal thing in the Herodian family. Nor is there any obstacle in the fact that he had another brother named F. (that is, the tetrarch) and another named Herod (full brother of the tetrarch F.), since his other two brothers Antipas and Antipater also had the identical name (Antipas is the same name as Antipater). In the first testament of Herod the Great he had been designated as heir in the event that Antipater died first. He lived privately in Rome with his wife Herodias (v.), when he offered hospitality to his brother Antipas. After being abandoned by his wife, nothing more was known of him.
