FILOMARINO, FRANCESCO MARIA da NAPOLI. - Capuchin theologian and preacher, b. in Napoli in 1598, d. 7 March 1683. Of the princely Filomarino family (formerly Filamarino), he made profession among the Capuchins on 24 Apr. 1615. He was an esteemed preacher, lecturer in sacred disciplines, three times provincial minister (1651-53, 1657-60, 1664-67), and dean of the consultors of the S. Uffalo in the Neapolitan kingdom. He refused the archiepiscopal see of Salerno.
In the Tractatus de divinis revelationibus duo, Napoli 1675, subjecting to theological examination seven propositions originating from an unnamed visionary, he sets forth the doctrine concerning public and private revelations, their modes and characteristics, and establishes the rules for distinguishing true from false ones.
During the popular uprising led by Tomaso Aniello in 1647, he defended the people against the viceroy and attempted to reconcile the parties.
