FILOMARINO, FRANCESCO MARIA da NAPOLI. - Capuchin theologian and preacher, b. in Naples in 1598, d. 7 March 1683. Of the princely family of the Filomarino (formerly Filamarino), he professed among the Capuchins on 24 April 1615. He was an esteemed preacher, a lecturer in sacred disciplines, three times provincial minister (1651-53, 1657-60, 1664-67), dean of the consultors of the Holy Office in the Kingdom of Naples. He refused the archiepiscopal see of Salerno.

In the Tractatus de divinis revelationibus duo, Naples 1675, subjecting to theological examination 7 propositions coming from an unnamed visionary, he sets out the doctrine on public and private revelations, on their modes and characteristics, and establishes the norms for distinguishing the true from the false.

During the popular uprising led by Tomaso Aniello in 1647, he defended the people against the viceroy and attempted to reconcile the parties.
