FORESTI, TEODORO DA BERGAMO. - Capuchin preacher and theologian of the former province of Brescia-Bergamo, born at Solto (Bergamo) on 15 Aug. 1565, died at Bergamo in 1637.
He entered religious life in 1581 and was definitor in his own province and in that of Venice, training numerous disciples in sacred oratory; he defended the rights of the Holy See against the claims of the Venetian government, which exiled him in 1626. Lecturer in theology at the Studies of Verona, Venice, and Padua (1601-1608), and at the general study house in Milan (from 1613), he directed celebrated pupils toward the doctrine of s. Bonaventura, which he sought to interpret according to Thomistic principles. Elected general definitor in 1633, he published the De almae et S.mae Trinitatis mysterio in seraph. divium Bonaventurum... paraphrases (Rome, 1633), with the appended Tractatus... de verbis et dictis et modis dicendi in hoc divino Trinitatis mysterio (ibid., n.d.), which he was unable to continue on other subjects. Urbano VIII appointed him apostolic visitor.
