Fischer, Engelbert Lorentz

FISCHER, ENGELBERT LORENTZ. - German philosopher, priest, b. at Aschaffenburg on 12 Oct. 1845, d. as parish priest at Würzburg on 17 Jan. 1923.

In his principal work Überphilosophie (Berlin 1907) he attempts to reconcile the oppositions of the various schools in a higher synthesis inspired by Christianity. Thus, in defending creation he does not deny a certain evolution, and while combating pantheism he emphasizes the relations of the world with God. Among his other works may be noted: Die Harmonie als Grundsatz des Seins und Lebens (Würzburg 1920); Die schöne Seele (Berlin 1922); etc.
