FISCHER, ENGELBERT LORENTZ. – German philosopher and priest, born in Aschaffenburg on 12 October 1845, died as parish priest in Würzburg on 17 January 1923.
In his principal work Überphilosophie (Berlin 1907), he attempts to reconcile the opposing positions of the various schools in a higher synthesis inspired by Christianity. Thus, while defending creation, he does not deny a certain evolution, and, although combating pantheism, he emphasizes the world’s relations with God. Among his other works are: Die Harmonie als Grundsatz des Seins und Lebens (Würzburg 1920); Die schöne Seele (Berlin 1922); etc.
