FRANCIS OF MARCHIA (Fr. Rubens, Fr. da Pignano, Fr. d'Appignano, Fr. de Esculo). - Scholastic of the 14th century. Wadding errs when he believes these names must be applied to three different figures. A Doctor of the Sorbonne, F. championed Scotism although at times tingeing it with Occamism. He was called Doctor Succinctus. He governed the Marches as Provincial from 1327 to 1332.
Principal works: Commentarii in 4 ll. Sententiarum; Quaestiones super Matthaeum; Circa praeconia Virginis Matris (he defends the Immaculate Conception of Mary); Commentarius in libros metaphysicorum; Quaestiones de paupertate Christi et Apostolorum. The Quaestiones were written against John XXII on the occasion of the struggle waged by the Spirituals for poverty. F. followed Michael of Cesena and Occam in the rebellion against the Pontiff and was condemned in the General Chapters of Paris (1328) and Perpignan (1331). In 1344 at Avignon, before Clement VI, F. fully retracted his errors.
