GENNADIO, ARCIVESCOVO DI ACRIDA

Also known as: Gennadios of Achrida

GENNADIUS, Archbishop of Ohrid. - Probably elected in 1282. Out of loyalty to the patriarch Gregory II of Cyprus (1283-89) he abdicated together with him. Proposed by the Emperor for the Byzantine see, he refused it, but he contested the choice of Athanasius I so effectively that he induced him to resign (1294).

G. is the author of an anti-Latin pamphlet, also preserved in cod. monacensis gr. 256, ff. 1-37, which lists texts from the Bible and the Fathers in supposed antithesis to Catholic doctrine on the procession of the Holy Spirit.
