GENNADIUS, Archbishop of ACRIDA. – Probably elected in 1282. In fidelity to Patriarch Gregory II of Cyprus (1283–89), he abdicated together with him. Proposed for the Byzantine see by the Emperor, he refused it, but he so effectively contested the election of Athanasius I that he induced him to resign (1294).
G. is the author of an anti-Latin pamphlet, preserved also in the codex Monacensis gr. 256, ff. 1–37, which lists texts from the Bible and the Fathers in alleged antithesis to Catholic doctrine on the procession of the Holy Spirit.
