GENNADIO, archbishop of ACRIDA. — Probably elected in 1282. Out of fidelity to the patriarch Gregorio II of Cyprus (1283–89), he abdicated together with him. Put forward by the Emperor for the Byzantine see, he refused it, but challenged the election of Atanasio I so effectively that he induced him to resign (1294).
G. is the author of an anti-Latin pamphlet, also preserved in cod. monacensis gr. 256, ff. 1–37, which lists texts from the Bible and the Fathers allegedly in antithesis to Catholic doctrine on the procession of the Holy Spirit.
