GERMANUS. - Friend of Cassian, who speaks of him in his works. He was his companion from adolescence, and with him at a very young age he entered the monastery of Bethlehem around 377-78.

There he remained until 385, and from that date he was the companion of Cassian's travels; Cassian calls him "the holy abbot G." and often introduces him as an interlocutor in the ascetic and spiritual conversations with the great Fathers of the desert, praising his spirit of prayer and mortification. Cassian points out repeatedly the great friendship and intimacy that had bound them for many years. G. perhaps died around the early 400s, since from that date, after the meeting with St. John Chrysostom at Constantinople, Cassian no longer speaks of him.
