GERMANO. — A friend of Cassian, who speaks of him in his works. He was his companion from adolescence and, at a very young age, entered with him the monastery of Bethlehem around 377–78.
He remained there until 385, and from that date was Cassian’s companion on his travels. Cassian calls him “the holy abbot G.” and often introduces him as an interlocutor in the ascetic and spiritual conversations with the great Fathers of the desert, praising his spirit of prayer and mortification. Cassian repeatedly points out the great friendship and intimacy that had bound them together for many years. G. perhaps died around the beginning of the year 400, since from that date, after the encounter with s. Giovanni Crisostomo in Constantinople, Cassian no longer mentions him.
