GIACINTO (BRUGIOTTI) da VETRALLA. - Capuchin missionary of the Roman province, b. at Vetralla on 23 Jan. 1601; at the age of twenty-four he entered the Order; preacher, provincial definitor, prefect of the mission in the Congo from 1651 to 1657, d. at Rome on 29 Aug. 1659.
He drew up various reports rich in information on the regions, kingdoms, and mission of the Congo (cf. Analecta Ord. Min. Capuccinorum, 13 [1807], pp. 89-96), which served as documentation for his fellow missionary G. A. CAVAZZONI (v.). Before going to the mission he compiled a Doctrina christiana ad profectum missionis totius regni Congi in quattuor linguas per correlativas columnas distincta (Rome 1650), with the Congolese, Portuguese, Latin, and Italian text, and some rules of pronunciation. After his return he published: Regulae quaedam pro difficillimi Congensium idiomatis faciliori captu ad grammaticae normam redactae (ibid. 1659), which was translated into English by H. Grattan Guinness (London 1882).
