JEROME OF PISTOIA. - Capuchin theologian and preacher, b. ca. 1508 to the Finucci (or Finugi) family, d. at Suda (Crete) on 29 Nov. 1570. He entered the Observant Friars Minor in 1531, and after 1552 passed definitively to the Capuchin Friars Minor: definitor general (1555-58; 1567-70), provincial minister of Tuscany (1558), of Naples (1560), of Bologna (1566).
At the Council of Trent (1562) he reported on the sacrament of Order; from his teaching in the general studies of Rome (1567) and Genoa (1570) came the De quantitatibus rerumque distinctionibus dialogus (Rome 1570), a commentary on the Formalitates of G. Duns Scotus; to provide for the Bonaventuran orientation of the schools of the Order he contributed to the corrected edition of the text Scriptum d. Bonaventurae... in quatuor libros Sententiarum (4 vols., ibid. 1568-69, edited by the Conventual Friar A. Posi); Pius V appointed him apostolic theologian (1568) and made use of him as a counselor. In his preaching he polemicized against Protestant doctrine; at the request of his hearers he published 22 Prediche (Bologna 1567, Venice 1570). He induced the apostate Carnesecchi (v.) to receive the Sacraments on the eve of his execution. He treated with Pius V concerning the naval expedition against the Turks of 1570; as superior of the Capuchin chaplains, he sacrificed his life in assisting the plague-stricken soldiers.
