GIROLAMO del PACCHIA. - Painter, born in Siena on 5 May 1477; said to have died in France after 1533. He was the son of a stucco-worker, Giovanni di Giovanni da Zagabria.
After studying in Florence, he was in Rome in 1500; in 1508 he painted a Madonna for Pontignano, perhaps lost; in 1510 he was in Perugia. In 1511 he painted a banner for the company of S. Bernardino in Siena, where he remained until about 1530. After 1533 he went to France, where he died.
The stylistic basis of his painting, of which he left numerous examples in his native city—suffice it here to recall the frescoes in S. Bernardino (1518) and the many panel paintings in the Accademia and in the churches—remains the art of Bernardino Fungai; yet elements derived from his knowledge of the works of Perugino and Pinturicchio, of Raffaello, and of the leading Florentines active at the beginning of the sixteenth century, such as fra Bartolomeo and Andrea del Sarto, are also evident in him.
Besides Siena, works by G. del P. are found in many churches and collections in Tuscany: at Camparboli near Asciano, in the church of S. Sebastiano; at Pienza, in the Episcopal Palace; at Sarteano and Sinalunga, in the collegiate church; at Montepulciano, in S. Agostino; and at Florence, in the Uffizi. Others are in the principal Italian and foreign museums.
