After studying in Florence, in 1500 he was in Rome; in 1508 he painted a Madonna for Pontignano, perhaps now lost; in 1510 he was in Perugia. In 1511 he painted a banner for the company of St Bernardino in Siena, in which city he remained until about 1530. Then, after 1533, he went to France, where he died.
The stylistic foundation of his painting, of which he left numerous examples in his homeland, may be exemplified by the frescoes in S. Bernardino (1518) and the many panels in the Accademia and in the churches, remains Bernardino Fungai’s art; but in him are also evident elements drawn from his knowledge of the works of Perugino and Pinturicchio, of Raphael and the leading Florentines active at the beginning of the 16th century, such as Fra Bartolomeo and Andrea del Sarto.
Besides in Siena, works by G. del P. are in many churches and collections in Tuscany, at Campobolli near Asciano in the church of S. Sebastiano, at Pienza in the Palazzo vedi, at Sarteano and at Sinalunga in the collegiate church, at Montepulciano in S. Agostino and at Florence in the Uffizi; others are in the principal Italian and foreign museums.
