Jerome del Pacchia

JEROME DEL PACCHIA. - Painter, b. in Siena on 5 May 1477, d., it is said, in France after 1533. He was the son of a stucco worker, Giovanni di Giovanni da Zagabria.

After studying in Florence, in 1500 he was in Rome; in 1508 he painted a Madonna for Pontignano, perhaps lost; in 1510 he was in Perugia. In 1511 he painted a banner for the company of S. Bernardino in Siena, in which city he remained until around 1530. Then, after 1533, he went to France, where he died.

The stylistic foundation of his painting, of which he left numerous examples in his homeland — and here it suffices to recall the frescoes in S. Bernardino (1518) and the numerous panels of the Accademia and of the churches — remains the art of Bernardino Fungai; but elements drawn from knowledge of the works of Perugino and Pinturicchio, of Raphael and of the major Florentines active at the beginning of the sixteenth century, such as Fra Bartolomeo and Andrea del Sarto, are also evident in him.

Besides Siena, works by G. del P. are in many churches and collections of Tuscany, at Camparboli near Asciano in the church of S. Sebastiano, at Pienza in the Episcopal Palace, at Sarteano and at Sinalunga in the collegiate church, at Montepulciano in S. Agostino and at Florence in the Uffizi; others are in the principal Italian and foreign museums.
