GIROLAMO da MONTEFORTINO. - Franciscan theologian, Angelo Bucci in the secular state, born at Montefortino (now Artena) on 14 Nov. 1662, died at Rome on 12 Apr. 1738. Professor of philosophy and theology, and provincial (Frascati 1707), he laboured tirelessly for the dissemination of Duns Scoto (v.).
His principal work, by which he became one of the most deserving Scotists of the 18th century, is: J. Duns Scoti Summa Theologica ex universis operibus eius concinnata iuxta ordinem et dispositionem Summae s. Thomae Aquinatis (5 vols., Rome 1737; 2nd ed., 6 vols., there 1900-1903).
In the preface G. explains the purpose of his work, namely to arrange Scotist thought in a methodical form, broadly following the order of the Summa of St Thomas. Naturally, such a work could not be free from defects, for example, that of having had to fill the gaps with writings by other authors. Nevertheless, G.'s work has the merit of having been, for more than two centuries, one of the most useful instruments for knowledge of Scotist thought.
