GIROLAMO da MONTEFORTINO. - Franciscan theologian, born Angelo Bucci, at Montefortino (now Artena) on 14 Nov. 1662, died at Rome on 12 Apr. 1738. Professor of philosophy and theology, and provincial (Frascati 1707), he labored unceasingly for the spread of the thought of Giovanni Duns Scoto (q.v.).
His principal work, by which he became one of the most noteworthy Scotists of the 18th century, is: *J. Duns Scoti Summa Theologica ex universis operibus eius concinnata iuxta ordinem et dispositionem Summae s. Thomae Aquinatis* (5 vols., Rome 1737; 2nd ed., 6 vols., ibid. 1900-1903).
In the preface G. explains the aim of his work, which is to arrange in a methodical form, following in general the order of the Summa of St Thomas, the thought of Scotus. Naturally such a work could not be free from defects, for example, that of having had to supply lacunae with writings of other authors. Despite this, G.’s work merits recognition as having been, for more than two centuries, one of the most useful instruments for the knowledge of Scotist thought.
