JEROME OF MONTEFORTINO. - Franciscan theologian, in the world Angelo Bucci, b. at Montefortino (today Artena) on 14 Nov. 1662, d. at Rome on 12 Apr. 1738. A professor of philosophy and theology, and provincial (Frascati 1707), he carried out an indefatigable work for the diffusion of the thought of John Duns Scotus (v.).
The principal work, with which he made himself one of the most deserving Scotists of the 18th century, is: J. Duns Scoti Summa Theologica ex universis operibus eius concinnata iuxta ordinem et dispositionem Summae s. Thomae Aquinatis (5 vols., Rome 1737; 2nd ed., 6 vols., ibid. 1900-1903).
In the preface G. explains the purpose of his work, which is to arrange in methodical form, following in general outline the order of the Summa of St. Thomas, the Scotist thought. Naturally such a work could not be free from defects, for example, that of having had to supply the gaps with writings of other authors. Notwithstanding this, the work of G. has the merit of having been, for more than two centuries, one of the most useful instruments for the knowledge of Scotist thought.
