GIUSEPPE da DREUX. - Ascetical writer of the Paris Capuchin province, b. at Dreux (Normandy) in 1629, he entered the Order on 28 July 1647, was a zealous preacher, and d. at Paris on 28 Jan. 1671.
As master of novices (from 1665), he wrote La conduite intérieure pour toutes les actions de la journée (Paris 1667[?]), repeatedly published and translated (Italian trans. Venice 1768). His course of spiritual exercises, Solitude séraphique (Paris 1671; Italian trans. Piacenza 1706), is still esteemed. Only from the last century were the Courtes méditations ascétiques pour tous les jours de l'année published, in revised form (Paris 1887 and 1924; likewise translated into various languages; Italian trans. Gesù modello e maestro, Turin 1920).
