JOSEPH OF LEONESSA, Saint. - Capuchin missionary and preacher of the Umbrian province, b. at Leonessa on 8 Jan. 1556, he was clothed as a novice in the small convent of the Carcerelle (Assisi) on 3 Jan. 1572 (not 1573), was promoted to preacher on 21 May 1581 at Perugia, d. at Amatrice (Rieti) on 4 Feb. 1612.

On May 1, 1587, he was assigned, together with two confreres, to establish a mission in Constantinople; there he assisted imprisoned Christians and brought an apostatebishop back to the faith; for his daring attempt to preach to Sultan Murad III, he was condemned to the punishment of the hook: for three days he remained suspended from the gallows with a hook in one hand and another in one foot. Having miraculously escaped, he was driven out of Constantinople together with his confreres in 1589. In Italy he devoted himself to popular preaching, rich in conversions and reconciliations: his penitent life and his supernatural charisms increased the effectiveness of his words. He promoted works of social assistance, such as Monti di pietà and grain banks, and hospitals. Various manuscripts of his survive (Rome, Archivio della postulazione generale dei Minori Cappuccini) containing sermons, homilies, panegyrics, and notes and preachable material. Beatified by Clement XII on June 22, 1737, he was canonized by Benedict XIV on June 29, 1746. Feast day February 4.
