JOSEPH THE HYMNOGRAPHER, Saint. - Basilian monk, b. at Syracuse in 816, d. at Constantinople on 3 April 886. Having taken refuge in the Peloponnese to escape the Saracen invasion, he became a monk at Thessalonica (841), whence he moved to Constantinople. Having set out on a mission to Rome to the Pope, he was captured during the journey by pirates and carried off to Crete; afterwards, having been ransomed, he returned to Jerusalem, founded a monastery there (ca. 850) and there composed his celebrated hymns, received into the liturgy, which earned him the nickname of "hymnographer" par excellence. He was exiled, under Photius, because he was a friend of the bishop St. Ignatius (867); but on the latter's death he was able to return to the monastery and to live in good harmony with Photius.
