GNECCHI SOLDI, ORGANTINO. - Jesuit, missionary, b. at Casto Val Sabbia (Brescia) in 1553, d. at Nagasaki on 22 April 1609. A Jesuit in 1555, he was for some time rector of the College of Loreto and then of St. Paul's at Goa, in India, where he had gone in 1567. But already the following year he set sail for Japan and, settling in the capital Miyako, remained there from 1570, for more than 35 years, even during the periods of persecution. Worn out by toil and illness, he was forced to retire to Nagasaki in 1606, where he died three years later.
Loved and esteemed by all for his gentle prudence, his untiring zeal (in one year he baptized 11,000 idolaters), and his skill in governing, he enjoyed the special confidence of the two rulers Taikosama and Nobunaga, from whom he obtained several favors. At Miyako he built a beautiful church, the faithful contributing generously to the expenses, and in memory of Xavier's arrival in Japan, which took place on 15 August, he wished it to be dedicated to Mary Assumed and on 15 August 1576 he blessed it, not yet finished, and celebrated the first Mass there. He erected another church, dedicated to St. Michael, a league from Miyako, and also opened at Azoutchi in 1582 a seminary to form an indigenous clergy. Heir to the spirit of Xavier, he thanked the Lord for having chosen him as a slave of his beloved spouse, the dear Japanese Christendom.
