GIEZI (Gēbāzī; Septuagint = Γιεζί). - Servant of the prophet Eliseo (v.).
When the latter wishes to reward the generous hospitality of the good Shunammite woman, G. suggests to him that the best gift is to obtain a son for her (II Reg. 4, 11-17). When the Shunammite woman hastens to the prophet because of the sudden death of her unexpected little son, Eliseo sends the attentive G. to raise him, placing upon the child’s face the staff entrusted to him. But the resurrection does not take place and G., disappointed, reports the failure to his master, who was coming with the Shunammite woman and who will perform the miracle (II Reg. 4, 18-37).
Avarice and falsehood, on the occasion of the miraculous healing of the Syrian general Naaman, brought ruin upon G., who as punishment ended his days a leper (II Reg. 5, 20-27). The episode in which G. recounts to Ioram, king of Judah, the miracles performed by Eliseo (II Reg. 8, 1-6) precedes the foregoing one, since the king would never have allowed a leper to converse with him.
