This is the only information that exists regarding G. and his voluminous work. As is evident from our canonical book, it began with the attempted robbery by Heliodorus in the Temple (175 B.C.) and extended to the victory of Judas over Nicanor (161 B.C.).

The detailed and precise information contained in 2 Maccabees suggests that G. (from whom it derives) drew upon contemporary witnesses of the events and wrote shortly after 161 B.C.
