One day the unbelieving Jews... stirred up the city, then stormed the house of G., seeking to bring Paul and Silas before the people. But since they did not find them, they dragged G. and some brothers before the politarchs, shouting: "These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, and G. has received them!" (Acts 17:5-6). G. and the others arrested had to pay bail to obtain their freedom. Many exegetes have held that this G. is to be identified with that kinsman of Paul who sends greetings to the Romans with him (Rom. 16:21).
According to Greek tradition, G. would later have become bishop of Tarsus in Cilicia and died at Corfu. Feast on July 12 in the Roman Martyrology; on April 28-29 among the Greeks and Copts.
