Gielemans, Johannes

GIELEMANS, JOHANNES. - Born in 1427, he entered the priory of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine of Rubea Valle (Rooklooster) near Brussels in 1447 and was ordained a priest in 1464. For many years, until his death in 1487, he was subprior.

He is known as a copyist and above all as a hagiographer: Sanctilogium (4 vols., 1470-80); Novale Sanctorum (2 vols., 1483-85); Hagiologium Brabantiorum (2 vols., 1476-84). He does not, however, display much critical sense.
