GIORGIO DOLGORNKI. – First prince of Susdal, a city in central Russia, who lived in the 11th century. With him, alongside Kiev, the principal city of the Kingdom of Rus, the settlement of Moscè begins to exist; it later became the capital of modern Russia. In 1047 the primitive city comprised only part of the present-day Kremlin. G. consistently supported the Byzantineophile tendencies in opposition to Prince Jajslav of Kiev, who, driven by autonomist tendencies, had the monk Clement of Smolensk elected for that metropolitan see without any longer appealing to the Byzantine patriarch. The Byzantineophile tendency became traditional in the principality of Moscow and consequently throughout ancient Russia in the proper sense.
