SAVELOV, IOACHIN. - Patriarch of Moscow (1672-90). In 1685 he annexed the schismatic metropolis of Kiev to the patriarchate of Moscow. In the same year the law also appeared in which the State imposed the death penalty on the Old Believers. Earlier, in 1682, Avvakum (v.) had been burned at Pustozersk. G. reorganized the boundaries of the ecclesiastical districts and, following the example of the State, abolished the rights of seniority in the administration of the Church. He had the Protestant Quirinus Kuhlmann, a member of a sect from Bohemia, burned. He also made the Greek anti-Latin mentality triumph over the Ukrainian theological school, which had undergone a strong Latin influence. The head of the "Ukrainians," Silvestro Medvedev, was condemned to death and all the theological literature of Ukraine was banned.
