JOHN OF KRONSTADT. - A famous Russian ascetic, "Orthodox," b. in 1829 to a cleric in the vicinity of Arkhangelsk, d. in 1908. After completing his studies at the Ecclesiastical Academy of St. Petersburg, he came to Kronstadt, an island in the Gulf of Finland near St. Petersburg, where he was a priest in the local church of St. Andrew. There he carried out his activity until his death. He was never a monk. Nevertheless his life was entirely filled with a most ardent zeal for his own sanctification and that of his neighbor. He prayed much and at length, which constitutes a special mark of his. Many miracles are ascribed to him, even at a distance. He wrote a fine book, My Life in Christ, also translated into French. He died in the reputation of sanctity and was buried in St. Petersburg. He is sometimes venerated by the "Orthodox" in a manner very close to the sensual aberrations of the khlysty.
