JOSEPH PANIN OF VOLOKALAMSK. - One of the most celebrated monks of medieval Russia (1439-1515).
Descended from a noble family, he entered the monastic life under Abbot Paphnutius in the monastery of Bobrovsk, where he labored with great zeal for the restoration of religious life, which had been relaxed by excessive wealth. Both a severe discipline, not without harsh punishments, in the common life, and the splendor of the liturgical worship contributed to this. An obstacle to limiting the monastery's wealth was the fact that the indispensable admission of candidates to the episcopate belonging to aristocratic families could not be prevented.
To remedy these difficulties, G. founded his own monastery at Volokolamsk, west of Moscow, which became the center from which radiated that monastic reform and that renewal of the piety of the laity which gave a new aspect to the religious life of Russia for several centuries. Until the 17th century, monasticism was there the leading element of the Church. G. opposed with all his strength the assault both of the sects of the Judaizers and of the heresy of the anti-Trinitarians, and of Western humanism.
His masterpiece in this regard is the Prosvjetitel ("The Illuminator"). He succeeded in suppressing the heresy (employing even the death penalty) and in eliminating every influence of humanism. For this reason he has rightly become the father of the Russian Middle Ages. He left no religious writings in the Western sense of the word.
