GOLUBINSKIJ, EVFGENIJ. - Professor of ecclesiastical history at the Ecclesiastical Academy of Moscow (1834-1912). He was the first who dared to combat the traditional ideas, often distorted or even false, of his predecessors by making use of sources recently published and critically sifted by him. It is nothing surprising, therefore, that especially in the early years of his teaching he had dealings with the officials of the state censorship. Nevertheless the Metropolitan of Moscow, Macarius Bulgakov, protected him effectively.

G. published many works, for example on the Russian saints. However, his masterpiece remains the History of the Russian Church (4 vols., Moscow 1880-1917), which embraces every sector of ecclesiastical administration and of religious culture. Unfortunately blindness struck prematurely this distinguished historian and father of Russian ecclesiastical history. For this reason he was unable to continue his work, comprising 4 large volumes, beyond the introduction of the patriarchate in 1598.
