GOLUBINSKIJ, EEFGENIJ. - Professor of ecclesiastical history at the Ecclesiastical Academy of Moscow (1834-1912). He was the first to dare to challenge the traditional ideas, often distorted or even false, of his predecessors, through the use of recently published sources which he critically examined. It is therefore not surprising that, especially in the early years of his teaching, he had dealings with the officials of state censorship. Nevertheless, the metropolitan of Moscow, Macario Bulgakov, gave him effective protection.
G. published many works, for example on Russian saints. His masterpiece, however, remains the Storia della Chiesa russa (4 vols., Moscow 1880-1917), which embraces all sectors of ecclesiastical administration and religious culture. Blindness unfortunately struck the distinguished historian and father of Russian ecclesiastical history at an early age. He was therefore unable to continue his work, comprising 4 large volumes, beyond the introduction of the patriarchate in 1598.
