GIOVANNI DI KASTL. - Prior of the Benedictine abbey of Kastl (diocese of Eichstätt) around 1400, he is attested by manuscript evidence as the author of the following works:
De adhaerendo Deo (attributed to Alberto Magno until Grabmann discovered its author); Spiritualis philosophia de suipsiis vera et humili cognitione; De natura, gratia, gloria ac beatitudine in patria; De lumine increato; Expositio in Regulam s. Benedicti; Clenodium religiosorum;
Expositio psalmorum in generali; he was also the author of short treatises, some of them in the form of prayers. Of the aforementioned works, Trithemius mentions only the Expositio in regulam, though he recalls others. Only the De adhaerendo Deo has been printed. In it G. shows himself to be well acquainted with the gnoseology, metaphysics, doctrine of Grace, and mysticism of the Aquinate, and faithful to tradition in his conception of the spiritual life. Firmness in asceticism (the reform of Kastl) and self-knowledge are the foundation for an intimate and devout veneration of the humanity of Christ, especially of the sacred stigmata.
