JOHN OF KASTL. - Around 1400 prior of the abbey of Kastl, a Benedictine (diocese of Eichstätt), he is shown by manuscript evidence to be the author of the following works:
De adhaerendo Deo (attributed to Albert the Great, until Grabmann discovered its author); Spiritualis philosophia de suipsiis vera et humili cognitione; De natura, gratia, gloria ac beatitudine in patria; De lumine increato; Expositio in Regulam s. Benedicti; Clenodium religiosorum;Expositio psalmorum in generali; he was also the author of short treatises, some of them in the form of prayers. Trithemius mentions of the aforementioned only the Expositio in regulam, while nevertheless recalling others. Only the De adhaerendo Deo was printed. In it G. shows himself a good connoisseur of the epistemology, metaphysics, doctrine of Grace and mysticism of the Aquinate, and faithful, in his conception of the spiritual life, to tradition. Firmness in asceticism (the reform of Kastl) and knowledge of oneself are the foundation for an adhering, intimate veneration of the humanity of Christ, especially of the sacred stigmata.
