GIUSTINA, saint, martyr - Bronze statue of the Saint. Work of Donatello and pupils - Padua, basilica of the Santo.

JUSTINA, Saint, Martyr. - Much venerated in northern Italy, she is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on 7 October. The oldest testimony concerning her is that of Venantius Fortunatus, who mentions the church of G. at Padua built over her tomb and adorned with paintings (Vita s. Martini, IV, 672 ff.).

According to the testimony of an inscription, this church would have been built between the 5th and 6th centuries by a certain Opilio, praetorian prefect; beside it there developed a flourishing Benedictine monastery. The Passio, written by a sedi-
