JUSTUS OF LYON, Saint. - He is commemorated several times in the Hieronymian Martyrology, either alone or with Viator; it seems, however, that the true dies natalis is October 14. There exists a Vita written toward the end of the 5th century, well informed and generally reliable, according to which J. was first a deacon of Vienne, then bishop of Lyon. As such he took part in the Council of Valence in 374 and in that of Aquileia in 381. He governed the diocese with great zeal, distinguishing himself also in the exercise of the virtues. On his return from Aquileia he abdicated the episcopate and withdrew to Egypt, living unknown among the solitaries in penance and prayer. After his death, his body was transferred to Lyon and buried in the church of the Sts. Maccabees, which soon took his name, and already in the 5th century his tomb was much frequented and venerated.
