GIUSTO of LIONE, saint. - He is commemorated several times in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum, alone or with Viatore; it seems, however, that the true dies natalis is 14 October. There is a Vita written towards the end of the fifth century, well informed and generally reliable, according to which G. was first deacon of Vienne, then bishop of Lione. In that capacity he took part in the Council of Valence in 374 and in that of Aquileia in 381. He governed the diocese with great zeal, distinguishing himself also in the practice of the virtues. On his return from Aquileia he resigned the episcopate and withdrew to Egypt, living unknown among the solitaries in penance and prayer. After his death, his body was transferred to Lione and buried in the church of SS. Maccabei, which soon took his name; already in the fifth century his tomb was much frequented and venerated.
