GRAUN, KARL HEINRICH. - Musician, b. at Wahrenbrück on 7 May 1701, d. at Berlin on 8 Aug. 1759. He completed serious and profound studies at Dresden with illustrious masters of the time.
His first sacred compositions won him the admiration of all, after which he passed with success to the theatrical genre. At Brunswick he was chapel master and director of the theater, for which he wrote many scores that won him general sympathy. Among his works esteemed for purity of inspiration and rigorous musical phraseology are to be numbered: cantatas, Te Deum, the oratorio Der Tod Jesu (11 Apr. 1754, Berlin), sonatas for organ, etc.
