Called to the religious state, she encountered opposition and difficulties, and only in 1823 was she able to join the Sisters of Providence at Ruillé-sur-Loire. In 1840, at the request of the Bishop of Vincennes, she went to America with five religious sisters and there opened schools and an orphanage. As the number of sisters and houses increased, the Institute acquired its own juridical status. Mother G. drew up an ambitious educational programme, making the training of Catholic teachers the centre of her activity. The cause of her beatification has been introduced before the Sacred Congregation of Rites.
