GUÉRIN, ANNE. - In religion Mother Théodore, b. at Etables on 2 Oct. 1798, d. at St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Indiana, U.S.A.), on 14 May 1856.

Called to the religious state, she suffered opposition and setbacks, and only in 1823 was she able to reach the Sisters of Providence at Ruillé-sur-Loire. In 1840, at the request of the bishop of Vincennes, she went to America with five religious sisters and there opened schools and orphanages. As the number of sisters and houses increased, the Institute acquired its own juridical standing. Guérin outlined a bold educational program, making the formation of Catholic teachers the center of her activity. The cause for her beatification has been introduced before the Sacred Congregation of Rites.
