GUÉRIN, ANNE - THÉRÈSE. - In religion, Mother Théodore, born at Etables on 2 October 1798, died at Ste-Marie des Bois (Indiana, U.S.A.) on 14 May 1856.
Called to the religious life, she suffered opposition and adversity, and only in 1823 was she able to join the Sisters of Providence at Ruillé-sur-Loire. In 1840, at the request of the bishop of Vincennes, she went to America with five religious women and opened schools and orphanages there. As the number of sisters and houses increased, the Institute acquired its own juridical character. G. drew up an ambitious educational program, making the formation of Catholic teachers the focus of her activity. The cause of her beatification has been introduced before the Sacred Congregation of Rites.
