Grimminck, Carolus Ludovicus

GRIMMINCK, CAROLUS LUDOVICUS. - Flemish mystic, b. of a patrician family at Ypres on 28 May 1676, d. at Watou on 12 Nov. 1728. Ordained a priest in 1700, he was entrusted with the care of souls in various parishes of Flanders.

Driven along the path of mortification, poverty, detachment and absolute disinterestedness, yielding to a divine inspiration in 1714 he withdrew as a hermit into the solitude of Monts-des-Cats, in order to unite himself more freely to God. His spiritual notes, scattered through his jottings on the Exercises of 1713, 1721, 1723, in his letters, and in his extracts from St. Augustine and St. Teresa, give the moving picture of his faithful and continuous ascent, which brought him even to continual contemplation.
