Gringore, Pierre

GRINGORE, PIERRE. - Poet, b. perhaps in Normandy between 1470 and 1480, d. in 1539 (?). He wrote for the theater, composed poems and satires; on the religious plane he accepts the dogmas of the Church, but does not relive the mystical-ascetic sentiment (his verses to the Virgin are neglected). If he mocks the clerical world, he does not do so out of opposition to the faith, but because he feels himself a convinced Gallican in the defense of the rights of the king against the pope (his sharpest barbs are against Julius II).
